How to Sell Used Gold Jewellery in Qatar for Cash Without Big Losses
⏱️️ Calculating reading time...
If you live in Doha and you have some old gold jewellery lying in locker - maybe broken chain, old bangles, or designs you don't wear anymore - and you want to sell it for cash, first question is where to sell without big loss. I had same situation last year. I wanted to sell my mother's old set to buy new design, but first shop in mall offered me very low price, almost 12% less than market rate.
After that I visited 7-8 shops in Gold Souq, asked their buying rates, noted deductions, and learned how to sell without losing much. So I am sharing my personal experience, how you can sell used gold jewellery in Qatar for cash with minimum loss.
Why Selling Gold Jewellery Causes Loss
When you buy jewellery, you pay gold rate plus making charges plus stone charges. If rate is 275 QAR per gram for 22K and making is 30 QAR, you pay 305 QAR per gram.
But when you sell it back, shop will not give you making charges. They only give you gold value, and even from gold value they deduct 2-5% as checking charges. So you lose making plus deduction.
That's why if you don't know where to sell, you can lose 15-20% easily. But if you know tricks, you can reduce loss to just 2-3%.
Best Places to Sell Used Gold Jewellery in Qatar for Cash
- Doha Gold Souq (Near Souq Waqif and Souq Al Faleh)
This is best place to sell. There are 80+ shops, competition is high, so they give better buying rate than malls.
In Gold Souq, most shops buy back at Qatar gold price minus 2 to 4 QAR per gram. Some shops even give spot rate if jewellery is 22K 916 hallmarked and without stones. Malls deduct 8-12 QAR per gram.
I always check Qatar gold price today on https://qatargoldratetoday.com/ before going to sell. So I know exact gram rate.
For example, last month I sold 15 gram 22K old chain. Qatar gold price today for 22K was 276 QAR per gram = 4140 QAR value. Shop in Gold Souq gave me 272 QAR per gram = 4080 QAR, only 60 QAR loss. Mall shop was giving 265 QAR per gram = 3975 QAR, 165 QAR loss. So Gold Souq saved me 105 QAR.
- Big Brands - Malabar, Joyalukkas, Kalyan
Big brands are slightly lower in buying rate than Gold Souq small shops, but they are trusted and they give cash instantly.
Malabar Gold - They buy back at market rate minus 3-5 QAR per gram if you have their bill. They also give option to exchange for new jewellery with zero deduction on gold value, only you pay new making. Good if you want to exchange.
Kalyan Jewellers - They have good exchange offer. If you exchange old gold for new, they give full Qatar gold price for old gold, no deduction. So if you don't need cash but want new design, Kalyan exchange is best.
- Sell Gold Bars and Coins for Less Loss
If you have gold bars, biscuits, or coins 24K 999.9, you will get almost full Qatar gold price, with only 1-2 QAR per gram deduction. Because bars have no making, no stone.
That's why I always tell friends - if you buy for investment, buy bars, not jewellery. When you sell bars, you get almost same price you see online. When you sell jewellery, you lose making.
I sold a 10 gram 24K bar last year, I got only 15 QAR less than market value. But when I sold 10 gram 22K necklace, I lost 350 QAR including making.
How to Get Best Price - My Tricks
- Check Qatar gold rate today before selling: Gold rate changes twice daily. Sell when rate is high. I check rate on https://qatargoldratetoday.com/ every morning. If Qatar gold rate today is up by 3-4 QAR compared to yesterday, that's best time to sell.
- Clean your jewellery: Remove dirt, oil, dust. Clean with warm water and soft brush.
- Remove stones before selling: If your jewellery has stones, pearls, meena work, remove them or ask shop to weigh gold only.
- Keep original bill: Bill should show weight, purity (916 for 22K), making separately. With bill, shop deducts less.
- Sell 22K 916 hallmarked only: 22K and 24K get best buying rate.
- Compare at least 3 shops: Don't sell to first shop. Check at least 3 shops in Gold Souq, note their per gram buying rate. Difference of 3 QAR per gram on 30 grams is 90 QAR.
- Don't show urgency: If you say "I need cash urgently today", they will give low rate.
- Consider exchange instead of cash: If you don't need cash urgently but want new design, exchange old for new. In exchange, many brands give full Qatar gold price for old gold, no deduction.
Common Mistakes When Selling
- Selling in malls: Malls have high rent, so they deduct more, 8-12 QAR per gram. Gold Souq deducts only 2-4 QAR.
- Selling with stones: If you sell jewellery with stones without removing, you lose stone weight.
- Selling without checking rate: If you don't know live rate, shop can tell you lower rate.
My Personal Experience
Last December, I had 28 gram old 22K set. I wanted cash for laptop.
I checked Qatar gold price today on https://qatargoldratetoday.com/ - 22K was 278 QAR per gram. So 28 gram value = 7784 QAR.
I went to Gold Souq. First shop offered 270 QAR per gram = 7560 QAR. Second shop offered 273 QAR per gram = 7644 QAR. Third shop, Al Zain, offered 275 QAR per gram = 7700 QAR, only 84 QAR loss.
I sold to third shop for 7700 QAR cash. Loss only 84 QAR, about 1% loss.
If I had sold in CityCenter mall, they offered 268 QAR per gram = 7504 QAR, 280 QAR loss. So comparing saved me 200 QAR.

Final Words
Don't sell gold jewellery unless you really need cash or you want to exchange for new design. Gold price in Qatar is going up year by year.
But if you must sell, always sell in Gold Souq, not in malls. Check Qatar gold rate today online before going. Clean jewellery, remove stones, keep bill, compare 3 shops, and bargain on deduction.
Remember, when you sell, you should get Qatar gold price minus max 3-4 QAR per gram for 22K hallmarked jewellery. If shop says minus 8-10 QAR, walk away.
Once you understand Qatar gold price and how shops calculate buying rate, you will never face big loss.
