Is It Cheaper to Buy Gold in Qatar or Dubai? (Price & Tax Comparison)
If you live in Gulf, you always hear this debate - is gold cheaper in Qatar or Dubai? I heard this so many times in Doha Gold Souq. Some say Dubai is cheaper because it's famous for gold, some say Qatar is cheaper now because of low making charges. I also had same confusion last year when my cousin in Dubai told me to buy from there, while my friend in Doha said Qatar is better.
So I actually compared both markets myself. I went to Dubai Gold Souk during my vacation in December, checked rates, making charges, VAT. And I compared with Doha Gold Souq where I buy regularly. Let me share real comparison in simple words.
Understanding Qatar Gold Price vs Dubai Gold Price
First thing you must know - gold rate in both Qatar and Dubai is linked to international gold price. So base gram rate is almost same in both cities. Difference is only 1-2 QAR per gram, sometimes Dubai slightly cheaper by 1 QAR because of higher volume.
When you check Qatar gold price on board in Doha, and Dubai gold price on board in Dubai Gold Souk, you will see almost same rate for 24K. For example, if 24K is 296 QAR per gram in Doha, in Dubai it might be 295 QAR per gram. So base price difference is very small.
Real difference comes from making charges and tax, not gram rate.

Making Charges - Where Qatar is Cheaper
This is where Qatar wins, from my experience.
In Dubai Gold Souk, making charges are higher than Doha. In Dubai, for a simple 22K chain, they charge 25 to 50 AED per gram making. That's around 25 to 50 QAR per gram. For heavy bridal sets, they charge 60 to 100 AED per gram.
In Doha Gold Souq, making is lower. For same simple chain, shops charge 10 to 25 QAR per gram. For heavy bridal set, 30 to 60 QAR per gram. So you save at least 10-20 QAR per gram in Qatar.
Why? Because in Dubai, Gold Souk is very touristy. Shopkeepers know tourists will pay. In Doha, most customers are residents, regular, so shops keep making low.
I bought a 22K necklace 12 grams in Dubai last December. Making was 35 AED per gram = 420 AED total. Same design in Doha, making was 22 QAR per gram = 264 QAR total. So I paid 156 QAR extra making in Dubai.
So if you compare Qatar gold price plus making, Qatar is cheaper for jewelry.
Tax Comparison - VAT in Both Countries
Now tax part.
Qatar: There is no VAT on 24K gold bars and biscuits if they are 99.9% pure investment grade. For jewelry, there is no VAT on gold value, but some shops add 5% VAT on making charges only. Many shops in Doha Gold Souq don't even charge VAT on making if you bargain. So effective tax in Qatar is almost zero.
Dubai: Dubai has 5% VAT on gold jewelry, including gold value and making charges. So if you buy 10 gram jewelry for 3000 AED, you pay 150 AED VAT extra. That's around 150 QAR extra.
For gold bars, Dubai also has 5% VAT if bar is less than 99% pure or if you are tourist. If you are buying investment bar 99.9% pure, VAT is zero in Dubai also, same as Qatar.
So for jewelry, Qatar has lower tax than Dubai. For bars, both have zero VAT if you buy 99.9% pure.
Which is Cheaper Overall? My Calculation
Let me give you real example I calculated in December.
I wanted to buy 20 gram 22K necklace.
In Doha:
Qatar gold price today for 22K was 273 QAR per gram = 5460 QAR gold value
Making 22 QAR per gram = 440 QAR
VAT 0
Total = 5900 QAR
In Dubai same week:
Dubai gold price for 22K was 271 QAR per gram = 5420 QAR gold value
Making 35 AED per gram = 700 QAR
VAT 5% on total = 306 QAR
Total = 6426 QAR
So Doha was cheaper by 526 QAR for same 20 gram necklace.
For gold bars 50 gram 24K:
Doha: Qatar gold price for 24K 296 QAR x 50 = 14800 QAR + making 2 QAR per gram = 100 QAR = 14900 QAR, no VAT.
Dubai: 295 QAR x 50 = 14750 QAR + making 3 AED per gram = 150 QAR + VAT 0 for 99.9% bar = 14900 QAR. Almost same.
So for bars, both almost same price. For jewelry, Qatar is cheaper.
When Should You Buy in Dubai Instead?
There are some cases when Dubai is better:
- If you want very heavy, antique Dubai design that is not available in Doha, then Dubai has more collection.
- During Dubai Shopping Festival (DSF) in December-January, Dubai shops give zero making charges and gold coin free. During that time, Dubai can be cheaper.
- If you live in Dubai, obviously buying there saves flight cost. Flying from Doha to Dubai just to buy 10 gram gold will cost you flight ticket more than saving.
My Final Verdict - Where Should You Buy?
If you ask me honestly:
- For investment - gold bars, biscuits, coins 24K 99.9%: Both Qatar and Dubai almost same price. Buy where you live. Check Qatar gold rate today on https://qatargoldratetoday.com/ and Dubai rate same day, difference will be 1-2 QAR.
